Originally starting out as a Los Angeles auto parts store in the early 1950s, Bell quickly became a leader in safety equipment for a range of motorsports. Under Roy Richter’s leadership, Bell helmets started to appear in auto, motorbike, and cycle racing after 1955 when the first Bell helmet was worn (and put to the test) in the Indy 500 when its wearer crashed into a wall. Cal Niday, the lucky survivor, credited the Bell Helmet with saving his life, and Bell helmets was on its way to becoming an internationally-established helmet brand.
They produced their first bike helmet, the Bell Biker, in 1975.
